On March 9 the opening ceremony of the Taiwan-UK Sustainable Finance Training Cooperation Initiative-Sustainable Finance Professional Training Program was held. In attendance were both Minister of Finance (MOF) Jain-Rong Su and British Office Deputy Representative Tom Burn.

In his remarks, TABF Chairman Wu Chung-shu noted that the the program not only endeavors to cultivate talents, but also hopes that they can support banks in their role of financing sustainable development in Taiwan, and helping Taiwan reach its 2025 energy transformation goals.

TABF President Hank Huang in his remarks cited several lines from the book “The Little Prince: “One can only see the truth with one’s heart. The truth of the matter cannot be seen with the eyes alone.”

He noted that the world is moving in the direction of a more sustainable and low-carbon economy. This presents a new opportunity for Taiwan’s industrial development, and inevitably is also a challenge. He added that for the financial industry, sustainability is no longer just a social responsibility, but also plays a leading role in effectively guiding the industry to undergo sustainable transformation through financial tools.

The first cohort of trainees in the program will focus on assisting the nine listed state-owned banks, which account for about 50% of Taiwan’s overall credit scale, to develop a sustainable finance foundation and work with Taiwanese companies in their low-carbon transformation. The second phase will begin in August and is open to the entire domestic financial sector. It aims to cultivate sustainable finance expertise in the broader financial sector and promote more ESG-related solutions.

The program will feature the participation of many sustainable finance experts and organizations with related expertise, including Dr. Ben Caldecott, founding Director of the Oxford Sustainable Finance Group at the University of Oxford, BSI Consulting, CDP, Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), the UK’s Chartered Bankers Institute (CBI) and the Business Council for Sustainable Development (BCSD).
